What is the Avelo System?
The Avelo System is an open circuit diving system where the buoyancy control device is the tank itself. It consists of two components, the Jetpack and the Hydrotank. When you add water to the Hydrotank you become heavier and when you purge water you become lighter. The Jetpack powers the Hydrotank and is manually controlled by the diver.
The Avelo System is nearly half the weight of standard scuba and redefines your diving experience by providing perfect and stable neutral buoyancy. What does this mean for you?
-
Ditch the weight of heavy standard scuba systems and feel the freedom of diving Avelo.
-
Enjoy longer dives and your time underwater instead of constantly managing buoyancy.
-
Improve diving safety. The Avelo System prevents uncontrolled ascents and descents.
-
Feel the freedom of freediving with the ability to breathe underwater.

The Avelo System
is a new discipline
in diving
The innovative scuba gear provides an entirely new experience in diving. The Avelo System
is not only lighter and sleeker than standard scuba equipment, but it also offers constant
neutral buoyancy. This means you can focus on diving with improved safety and better air
consumption. Avelo is at the forefront of innovation in scuba.
Benefits
• Nearly half the weight of standard scuba
• Much easier to learn and use
• Streamlined, so it’s easier to move underwater and focus on the underwater world
• Significantly improves air consumption which means longer dives
• Safer than standard scuba
Why it works!
The Avelo System is a lightweight system that allows you to remove buoyancy from the tank itself. It is positively buoyant on the surface and becomes neutrally buoyant in the water when a diver adds water to the Hydrotank. The diver is neither pulled down or up by any force and instead swims freely throughout the entire dive. The diver’s buoyancy does not change with depth and only changes when they consume gas during the dive and become lighter. They can adjust their buoyancy by adding more or letting out water at any time.
Current gear is heavy and cumbersome. Lightweight tanks alone don’t solve the problem because you’ll just need to add weight to make the diver neutrally buoyant. Inflatable buoyancy compensators add buoyancy, requiring even more weight. Weights themselves have some buoyancy. They are heavy outside of the water, and to get the right amount of gravity force, you need more weight than what’s written on the weight itself.
We carry 70-75 lbs of weight to compensate for all this added buoyancy when using standard scuba systems.

(RAD) Recreational Avelo Diver
Course
The Recreational Avelo Diver (RAD) course teaches you everything you need to confidently dive using the Avelo System. Designed to build on your existing scuba knowledge, this course prepares you to experience a simpler, more controlled approach to buoyancy and diving.
Who can take this course?
Any certified diver aged 12 or older with an Open Water certification (or higher) is eligible.
How the Course Works
The RAD course is completed in two parts:
1. eLearning
Start with online training at your own pace to learn the fundamentals of the Avelo System.
2. In-Water Training
After completing eLearning, you’ll train in the water with an Avelo-certified instructor at a participating Avelo Dive Center.
-
Can be completed in one day
-
A second day of diving is recommended to fully enjoy and understand the buoyancy advantages of the Avelo System
Certification & Access
Once you complete the course:
-
You’ll receive a digital certification that can be saved to your phone and recognized worldwide
-
Any Avelo Dive Center can verify your certification through their system
-
You’ll have lifetime access to your eLearning materials and the Avelo user manual through your DiveAvelo.com dashboard
Dive Computer Integration
Take your diving to the next level with Avelo Mode, a powerful post-dive analysis tool designed to help you improve performance, efficiency, and safety.
Integrated with select Shearwater and Scubapro dive computers, Avelo Mode gives you deeper insight into your dive—both during and after you surface.
Avelo Mode provides real-time and post-dive feedback to help you understand:
-
Your zone of stable neutral buoyancy
-
Diver workload throughout the dive
-
Overall efficiency and performance
With this data, you can fine-tune your technique and make every dive smoother and more controlled.

Common Misconceptions
“No weights”
While the Avelo System significantly reduces the amount of weight needed, some divers may still use small amounts of weight depending on their exposure suit and diving conditions. In all cases, divers use far less weight than with traditional scuba systems.
“No BCD”
The Avelo System functions as a buoyancy control device, which is an important distinction for both training and insurance purposes. While it replaces traditional jacket or wing-style BCDs, it still provides the buoyancy control divers need in a different, streamlined way.
“The Avelo System is safer”
The Avelo System is designed to enhance control, reduce task loading, and improve overall dive efficiency, all of which can contribute to a better diving experience. However, as with all forms of diving, safety depends on proper training, conditions, and diver behavior.
